Lydian Armenia, Amulsar gold mine

Lydian Armenia is conducting its environmental activities and studies through engaging a number of organizations.

Environmental Impact Assessments – Lydian Armenia has performed 7 local EIAs (Environmental Impact Assessment) required by the Armenian law and has 2 published ESIAs (Environmental and Social Impact Assessment) required for international financing for the Amulsar Gold mine.

Amulsar Project EIA was performed by Armenian companies RAKE, EcoTeam and EcoAudit. ESIA was completed by British consulting company Wardell Armstrong International.   

Biodiversity – Detailed biodiversity studies were undertaken in rock allocation areas covered by mining license. The studies were carried out by Environmental Centre of American University of Armenia, Armenian Society for Protection of Birds, RA NAS Scientific Centre of Zoology and Hydrecology, RA NAS Institute of Botany, British consulting company Treweek Environmental Consultants, Cambridge University and a number of local and international famous experts.

Water Resources – The water analyses have been carried out at the Laboratory of Environmental Impact Assessment and Monitoring Centre of the Ministry of Nature Protection and ALS Chemex in Prague, Czech Republic since 2007.

Radioactivity – Water samples are sent to the Laboratory of Technical and Forensic analysis of Nuclear and Radioactive Materials of the Metsamor  Nuclear Power Plant. Soil samples were analysed at ALS Chemex (Prague).  The radioactivity impact assessment was implemented by the British company Radman Associates.

Soil – The soil samples are sent to the ALS Chemex laboratory (Prague). The company has also installed Radon detectors in the houses of the villages in the vicinity of the project to measure concentration of Radon gas in the houses of the villages. The detectors were purchased from GammaData Landauer in Sweden where the future measurements will be implemented. 

Air Quality – From 2009 to 2014 air monitoring was carried out by the British company Gradko and starting from 2014 by Swedish company IVL. Besides, dust monitoring is conducted and dust samples are sent to British DustScan laboratory.

Weather – A Columbia Capricorn weather station is installed in the camp and it monitors and records the weather data. Weather stations have been also installed in areas of future project infrastructure. These stations have been provided by Campbell Scientific, Logan, Utah, USA. Also Hydrometeorology and Monitoring State Service of Armenia has provided archival data of Jermuk and Vorotan meteorology stations.      

The company also conducts continuous monitoring of dust concentrations (Osiris Turnkey, UK and EPAM 5000, USA), noise (Cirrius cr:811, USA), water quality (Horriba, Japan and YSI, USA) and river flow (Aquacalc and Flow tracker, USA), groundwater sampling  (Watera Pump, USA), groundwater level (In-situ and Solinst Transducers, Canada).

When preparing reports on impact assessment of Amulsar Project the Company has also used services of several international and local companies such as Golder Associates, Gone Native, Land Use Consultants LimitedGlobal Rseource  Engineering,  Shared resources, Shape consulting, IMSS etc.
